Victorian and Edwardian Brighton and Hove was roofed in slate. A natural slate lasts a century, but the nails holding it rust out long before, and slates start to slide one at a time. Each slipped slate leaves a gap for the rain. We refix them with tingles, replace cracked slates with matched ones, and tell you honestly when a roof has reached the point where a full re-slate is the better spend.
