On older roofs, the tiles along the gable edge and along the ridge are held on by mortar. Sea air, frost and sun crack it, chunks fall onto the path, and the tiles loosen. In a strong wind a loose ridge tile is a real risk to anyone below.
A dry verge system replaces the mortar with interlocking plastic caps screwed to the battens and tiles. A dry ridge or dry hip system fixes each ridge tile mechanically over a ventilated roll. Nothing to crack, nothing to wash out, and the loft gets ventilation as well. Every re-roof we do is finished this way.
On a sound roof with failing mortar, dry verge and ridge can be fitted on their own, in a day on most houses, from a tower or scaffold.
